Automations run AI coding agents on a schedule. Cloud automations run in the cloud, even while your Mac is off, as often as every minute. Local automations run on your Mac.

## Cloud automations

- **Always on:** they run on Cloudroom's servers, so your laptop can stay closed.
- **A fresh agent each run:** each run starts a new Cloud thread in its own sandbox, with the project, agent, model, and `.env` files of the thread you created it from. It can also re-prompt that same thread instead.
- **Every minute:** with a check script, an automation can run every minute.

## Check first, then run the agent

Give a cloud automation a script. It runs first, for up to 60 seconds:

- **No output:** the run ends there. No agent starts.
- **Output:** an agent starts and gets that output with its prompt.

This makes frequent checks cheap. For example, check for new GitHub issues every minute, and start an agent only when one appears. The script keeps its own files between runs, so it can remember what it already saw.

## Schedules and limits

- **With a script:** every minute.
- **Without a script:** at most every 15 minutes, because every run starts an agent.
- **Schedule:** a cron expression with a timezone, or one run at a date or after a delay such as `30m`.
- **No overlap:** a run waits until the last one has finished.
- **Failures:** 3 failed runs in a row pause the automation.
- **Usage:** up to 100 cloud automations per account. Each run that starts an agent counts as one cloud agent on your [plan](/pricing).

## Create one

Ask your agent, for example: "Every minute, check for new GitHub issues labeled bug and fix each one." It sets up the automation and its script for you.

Or use the CLI. In a Cloud thread:

```bash
room-cli automation create --name "New bugs" --prompt "Fix these issues." \
  --cron "* * * * *" --timezone UTC --script-file check.sh
```

From a Local thread, add `--cloud --thread CLOUD_THREAD_ID`. The **Automations** panel in the sidebar lists your Local and Cloud automations together, so you can pause, run, or delete them there.

## Local automations

Local automations run on your Mac, only while it is awake and Cloudroom is open. Each one starts a thread with a prompt or runs a stored script, as often as every minute. They don't count toward your cloud usage. Create them in the **Automations** panel or with `room-cli automation create`.
